This year’s musical lineup is the most dynamic yet, featuring the intoxicating jam/jazz grooves of DanceFight, the proud and loud original roots music of The Catbirds with Chandler Travis and Steve reinvented classic rock of the Grab Brothers, and the infectious country rock of the Dave Sammarco Band.
The Elbows (featuring members of the Ticks) will reprise their highly celebrated performance of last year by offering a special set for kids at 12 noon.
All of the proceeds from the event benefit Friends of Our (Wellfleet) Recreation (FOOR), a nonprofit organization that provides a variety of resources to kids in Wellfleet, including furnishing uniforms, offsetting traveling expenses, purchasing equipment and undertaking special projects. One current such project is the resurfacing of the baseball field at Wellfleet Elementary School, which falls outside of the Town budget, and will be funded entirely by FOOR.
DanceFight, a power trio based in New York but with longstanding ties to the Cape, has been performing and recording together for half a decade. Driven by the fluid pyrotechnics of virtuoso Adam Platt on the key-tar (a keyboard with the pitch-bending capabilities of a stringed instrument that the player slings on his neck like a guitar), DanceFight features original compositions that travel through a dazzling array of rhythmic meters, musical timbres and sonic motifs. Their performances on and off the Cape invariably bring the dance floor alive with a sea of ecstatic, weaving musical celebrants. More info can be found online at www.myspace.com/dancefight.
The Catbirds are Rikki Bates, Dinty Child, Chandler Travis, & Steve Wood; they’re mostly from Cape Cod, and they’re a rock ‘n’ roll band, loud, rootsy, and proud, playing a mix of originals and obscure covers with an eye toward keeping folks dancing. They started up in April of 2010, but you may already know Rikki, Dinty, and Chandler from the Chandler Travis Philharmonic, or Steve from the Greenheads and the Freeze, or Chandler & Rikki from the Incredible Casuals, or Dinty from Session Americana and the Funky White Honkies… basically, the pedigree is about a mile long. One foot in the garage, one in New Orleans, the Catbirds exist to show folks how it’s done.
Mike Martin Y Los Rootsticks are currently based on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Mike Martin from Vieques, Puerto Rico, they have shared the stage with Jimmy Cliff, Lucky Dube, Culture, Barrington Levy, the Wailers and other international artists. The band has headlined the Vieques Carnival for the last 10 years. From 1999 to 2003 the band assisted in the succesful civil disobedience movement that resulted in the departure of U.S. Navy from the Island of Vieques, an island of 10,000 inhabitants that the Navy had been bombing for target practice since 1941. Following the resolution of situation in Vieques, the band has been based on Martha’s Vineyard, playing extensively at venues all over the Eastern Seaboard. The Grab Brothers are led by two multi-instrumental brothers – Larry and Marc Grab – with a “retro for today” sound that blends crunching lead guitar riffs, propulsize rock rhythms and soaring vocal harmonies. Rob Scott brings an unlikely combination of jazz sensibilities, arena-rock charisma and rapping skills to his work on the keyboards and vocals. Melora B. North writes in the Provincetown Banner, “the brothers are like an ‘orchestrated tossed salad’ with music emanating from flute, sax, harmonica, trombone, keyboards and electric and acoustic guitars, which gives them that full jam-band sound.” The Grab Brothers’ electrifying live performances win over audiences throughout Boston, the South Shore and Cape Cod. “Their performance and great ability to switch styles in an instant will keep you entertained like your first roller coaster ride,” says Gog at WKKL 90.7-FM radio in Boston. Their newest CD release Asian Red has garnered them airplay in the United States and internationally, including the single “Holly Would,” which has been in regular rotation on WPXY 103-FM. More info on the band can be found at www.grabbrothersband.com.
The Dave Sammarco Band, based in the Boston area, has delighted audiences for more than a decade. With a sound rooted in blues, country and rock, they deliver a soulful blend of music that is equal parts twang, traditional, and straight up rock ‘n’ roll. They have performed at the Wellfleet “Music at Mayo” series numerous times over the years, and will be welcomed back to the Baker Field tent with lusty enthusiasm. More info on the band can be found at www.davesammarcoband.com.
The Elbows, comprised of Julia Randall and Emma Dubner from the female pop-punk trio the Ticks, plus rock-steady journeymen Brett Dubner and Jay Cournoyer, has played to thousands of children across Cape Cod and beyond. Their whimsical, upbeat style of kids’ music invites audience participation and irrepressible smiles. Instruments are passed out to the audience, and children and adults alike will find themselves joining in the musical fun. More info on the Elbows can be found at http://www.theelbows.net/. Their special performance for kids will start at 12 noon, sharp.
The backdrop for this musical bonanza includes a variety of hot foods for sale prepared by local eateries, raw bar featuring some of the Wellfleet area’s finest deep-water oysters, beer and wine, activities for kids, arts & crafts for sale by local artisans, and much more.
Attendees are invited to bring blankets and/or beach chairs, but no outside alcohol, and the event will take place rain or shine.
Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the gate. Students, seniors and Wellfleet residents are half-price, and kids 13 and under are free.
